01 / The idea

Camcorders never had an undo button. You just rewound and shot it again.

ontape works the same way. Your footage lives on one continuous tape. Scrub back to the shot you flubbed, press REC, and the new take lands right over the old one. By the time you stop shooting, the edit is already done.

Tape over just the part you want to redo.

02 / How it works

Shoot. Rewind. Tape over it.

Step 1

Shoot

Press REC and shoot with your iPhone’s native camera app.

Step 2

Rewind

Missed the shot? Scrub back, or hit ⏮ to snap to the start of any clip.

Step 3

Tape over it

Press REC again. The new take replaces the old one, and the rest of the tape stays put.

03 / The look

Modern video has no character.

iPhones shoot sharp, clean, perfectly flat footage, and it all looks the same. MiniDV had soft color, a little grain, and the chroma smear of real DV. That’s the character, and it’s in every video you export.

04 / What’s on the tape

Everything a camcorder had. Nothing it didn’t.

Record

REC OVER

Rewind to any clip and record over it. The deck always tells you which clip you’re about to replace.

Navigate

Jump between cuts

⏮ and ⏭ snap the playhead to clip boundaries, so you can land on the exact shot you want.

Look

Real MiniDV

Soft color, a little grain, and the chroma smear that DV really had. It’s baked into your exports, not just a preview.

Library

A shelf of tapes

Keep a tape per trip, per project, or per mood. Rename them, swap between them, delete the ones you’re done with.

Protect

The write-protect tab

Slide the tab on a tape and it can’t be recorded over or deleted. Just like the real cassette.
SAVE

Share

Export when you’re done

Hit ⬆ and get a finished video with the tape look applied, ready to send.

Camera

It’s your iPhone’s camera

ontape uses the native iPhone camera controls. Zoom, switch lenses, and set up the shot exactly as you would for a regular iPhone video. Then the tape look is applied to what you shot.

05 / Why a tape?

Limits make you better.

A camcorder gave you one tape, one take at a time, and no undo. So you planned the shot, held it, and moved on. Those limits did the work that a thousand editing tools never could. They made you decide.

Remember this?

The birthday party. The road trip in the back seat. The school play shot from the third row. Camcorders made the 90s and 00s feel the way they did: a little soft, a little shaky, and completely real. ontape brings that back, in your pocket, on the iPhone you already carry.

No server. No account.

ontape has no servers. Your tapes live on your iPhone and go nowhere on their own. When a video is done, send it straight to a friend, or post it to the video platforms you already use. Where it goes is up to you.
